A Refutation of the Allegation that the Qur’an Confirms the Bible
By Guest Author: Elias (Based Muslim)
A common argument Christians make against Islam is that the Quran affirms their book, the Bible. This document will be refuting their claim.
The “Between Your Hands” Claim
While the Arabic phrase “ما بين يديه” does indeed literally mean “what is between his hands”, that is not the context. It means “what was before”, back when it was the uncorrupted Torah of Moses (not Ezra). This phrase which occurs plenty of times in this form.
“He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel previously, as a guide for people, and ˹also˺ revealed the Standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. Surely those who reject Allah’s revelations will suffer a severe torment. For Allah is Almighty, capable of punishment.”[1]
“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I advise you to do ˹only˺ one thing: stand up for ˹the sake of˺ Allah—individually or in pairs—then reflect. Your fellow man is not insane. He is only a warner to you before ˹the coming of˺ a severe punishment.”[2]
“Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.”[3]
“He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but they cannot encompass Him in ˹their˺ knowledge.”[4]
The first issue Christians encounter is that Quran 3:3 says “revealed”. Christians believe John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke wrote their Gospels with their own hands. This is clearly contradictory to the verse as the verse is basically saying that the Gospel was divinely inspired. The Injeel is singular and is the revealed text, the literal word of God, which was revealed to Prophet Eesa/Jesus (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not referring to the Gospels of John, Luke and so on, which were, so they claim, “inspired to unknown authors”. Christians typically respond with Paul saying that all scripture is divinely inspired. Let’s say for the sake of argument this is true. This makes one think, “Then who was it revealed to?” Allah the Exalted answers in his Perfect Revelation:
“Then in the footsteps of the prophets, We sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah revealed before him. And We gave him the Gospel containing guidance and light and confirming what was revealed in the Torah—a guide and a lesson to the God-fearing.”[5]
The Injeel was revealed to Jesus, son of Mary, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not to Matthew, John etc.
Jews and Christians Only Have a Portion of the Scripture
They have only a portion of the Scripture left, all the while claiming that they are better than the Disbelievers, when in reality they are no better than them.
“Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures yet believe in idols and false gods and reassure the disbelievers that they are better guided than the believers?”[6]
“Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scriptures? Yet when they are invited to the Book of Allah to settle their disputes, some of them turn away heedlessly.”[7]
As these verses state, they started to differ after the knowledge had been revealed and did so out of jealousy and animosity.
The Qur’an is used as a criterion to identify and judge the “inclinations” (i.e distortions) which seeped into the Truth.
“Indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood; granted them good, lawful provisions; and favoured them above the others. We ˹also˺ gave them clear commandments regarding ˹their˺ faith. But it was not until knowledge came to them that they differed out of mutual envy. Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment regarding their differences.”[8]
“We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ this Book with the truth, as a confirmation of previous Scriptures and a supreme authority on them. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires over the truth that has come to you. To each of you We have ordained a code of law and a way of life. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one community, but His Will is to test you with what He has given ˹each of˺ you. So compete with one another in doing good. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you ˹of the truth˺ regarding your differences.”[9]
The portion of the Scripture that still remains contains laws from Allah the Exalted. It is not 100% the inerrant word of Allah.
“But why do they come to you for judgment when they ˹already˺ have the Torah containing Allah’s judgment, then they turn away after all? They are not ˹true˺ believers.”[10]
Furthermore, after reading Quran 5:48, we see that the Quran is a supreme authority/criterion or standard over them. This means that the Bible’s truth is to be tested by the Quran. If that which is in the Bible conforms to that which the Quran says, it is accepted. If it does not, it is rejected. If it is neither, then we neither accept nor reject it. Here are some examples:
- An example of an accepted part of the Bible:
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.”[11]
“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is Allah—One.”[12]
As we can see, both the Quran and the Bible say that Allah the Exalted is One. This would be accepted and preserved.
- An example of a rejected part of the Bible:
“I and the Father are one.”[13]
“Those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. The Messiah ˹himself˺ said, “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah—my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates others with Allah ˹in worship˺ will surely be forbidden Paradise by Allah. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.”[14]
John 10:30 disagrees with the Quran. This part is most definitely not divinely inspired by Allah the Exalted and so is rejected.
As for Surah al-Maeda, 5:43, the context is that Allah the Exalted is highlighting the hypocrisy of the Jews in one aspect. They disbelieve in Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), him being sent from God, whilst taking him to be a judge even though the verdict from God which they ask for is in the Torah. The hypocrisy transpires in them preferring to take the verdict from Muhammad, upon him be peace, whom they do not take to be a Prophet even though they are ignoring the same verdict, which they hold to be divine.
The following hadith explains the context of this verse. It explains that two people among the Jews had fornicated. They sought a verdict from the Prophet instead of looking in their Torah. Abdullah Ibn Sallam, their Rabbi at the time, called out their lie.
“Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: The Jews brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) a man and a woman from among them who had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to them, “How do you usually punish the one amongst you who has committed illegal sexual intercourse?” They replied, “We blacken their faces with coal and beat them,” He said, “Don’t you find the order of Ar-Rajm (i.e. stoning to death) in the Torah?” They replied, “We do not find anything in it.” `Abdullah bin Salam (after hearing this conversation) said to them. “You have told a lie! Bring here the Torah and recite it if you are truthful.” (So the Jews brought the Torah). And the religious teacher who was teaching it to them, put his hand over the Verse of Ar-Rajm and started reading what was written above and below the place hidden with his hand, but he did not read the Verse of Ar-Rajm. `Abdullah bin Salam removed his (i.e. the teacher’s) hand from the Verse of Ar-Rajm and said, “What is this?” So when the Jews saw that Verse, they said, “This is the Verse of Ar-Rajm.” So the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the two adulterers to be stoned to death, and they were stoned to death near the place where biers used to be placed near the Mosque. I saw her companion (i.e. the adulterer) bowing over her so as to protect her from the stones.”[15]
The ‘None can change the words of Allah’ Claim
This argument is another one of the many spurious arguments the Christians bring. The verse has been taken out of context many times. In almost every other instance it occurs, it is referring to the Promise and Decree of Allah in the Qur’an, and that none could upset that by forgery or even misinterpretation. Here, we will present some commentaries on the verses that most commonly used by Christians.
Quran 10:64: “For them is good news in this worldly life and the Hereafter. There is no change in the promise of Allah. That is ˹truly˺ the ultimate triumph.”
Tafseer At-Tabari: “It’s meaning is that there is no upsetting to His Promise, and that none could change his word about that.”
Tafseer Ibn Katheer: “Meaning: This Promise cannot be changed, nor be upset nor be altered.”
Quran 6:34: “Indeed, messengers before you were rejected but patiently endured rejection and persecution until Our help came to them. And Allah’s promise ˹to help˺ is never broken. And you have already received some of the narratives of these messengers.”
Tafseer At-Tabari: “What has been revealed to his Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of promising him Victory over those who opposed him.”
Tafseer Ibn Katheer: “What He has decreed from Victory to the Believers in this Life and the Afterlife.”
Q6:115: “The Word of your Lord has been perfected in truth and justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All-Hearing, All- Knowing.”
Tafseer At-Tabari: “There is nothing which could change what has been told of in His Books occurring in its time, in which Allah has said that it would happen.”
Tafseer Ibn Katheer: “None could upset Allah’s Decree, neither in this Life nor in the Afterlife.”
Quran 18:27: “Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book of your Lord. None can change His Words, nor can you find any refuge besides Him.”
Tafseer At-Tabari: “There is no changing of what He has promised the People of Disobedience through His Words which He has revealed upon you.”
Tafseer Al-Baghawi: “Al-Kalbiyy said: The words are the Qur’an, and it has been said: There is none which could change what he has promised to the people who disobeyed Him”.
In short, when put into context as due, they refer to a Promise or Decree of God which cannot be changed, akin to the idiom “keeping your word equals keeping your promise”.
The Bible is Not the Word of Allah Due to Its Contradictions
Allah the Exalted says:
“Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have certainly found in it many contradictions.”[16]
In the Bible, we see many contradictions:[17]
- Who incited David to count the fighting men of Israel?
-
- God did (2 Samuel 24: 1)
- Satan did (1 Chronicles 2 1:1)
- In that count, how many fighting men were found in Israel?
- Eight hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9)
- One million, one hundred thousand (1 Chronicles 21:5)
- How many fighting men were found in Judah?
- Five hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9)
- Four hundred and seventy thousand (1 Chronicles 21:5)
- God sent his prophet to threaten David with how many years of famine?
- Seven (2 Samuel 24:13)
- Three (1 Chronicles 21:12)
- How old was Ahaziah when he began to rule over Jerusalem?

- Eight (2 Chronicles 36:9)
- How long did he rule over Jerusalem?
- Three months (2 Kings 24:8)
- Three months and ten days (2 Chronicles 36:9)
- The chief of the mighty men of David lifted up his spear and killed how many men at one time?
- Eight hundred (2 Samuel 23:8)
- Three hundred (I Chronicles 11: 11)
- When did David bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem? Before defeating the Philistines or after?
- After (2 Samuel 5 and 6)
- Before (1 Chronicles 13 and 14)
- How many pairs of clean animals did God tell Noah to take into the Ark?
- Two (Genesis 6:19, 20)
- Seven (Genesis 7:2). But despite this last instruction only two pairs went into the ark (Genesis 7:8-9).
- When David defeated the King of Zobah, how many horsemen did he capture?
- One thousand and seven hundred (2 Samuel 8:4)
- Seven thousand (1 Chronicles 18:4)
- How many stalls for horses did Solomon have?
- Forty thousand (I Kings 4:26)
- Four thousand (2 chronicles 9:25)
- In what year of King Asa’s reign did Baasha, King of Israel, die?
- Twenty-sixth year (I Kings 15:33–16:8)
- Still alive in the thirty-sixth year (2 Chronicles 16:1)
- How many overseers did Solomon appoint for the work of building the temple?
- Three thousand six hundred (2 Chronicles 2:2)
- Three thousand three hundred (1 Kings 5:16)
- Solomon built a facility containing how many baths?
- Two thousand (1 Kings 7:26)
- Over three thousand (2 Chronicles 4:5)
- Of the Israelites who were freed from the Babylonian captivity, how many were the children of Pahrath-Moab?
- Two thousand eight hundred and twelve (Ezra 2:6)
- Two thousand eight hundred and eighteen (Nehemiah 7:11)
- How many were the children of Zattu?
- Nine hundred and forty-five (Ezra 2:8)
- Eight hundred and forty-five (Nehemiah 7:13)
- How many were the children of Azgad?
- One thousand two hundred and twenty-two (Ezra 2:12)
- Two thousand three hundred and twenty-two (Nehemiah 7:17)
- How many were the children of Adin?
- Four hundred and fifty-four (Ezra 2:15)
- Six hundred and fifty-five (Nehemiah 7:20)
- How many were the children of Hashum?
- Two hundred and twenty-three (Ezra 2:19)
- Three hundred and twenty-eight (Nehemiah 7:22)
As per Quran 4:82, the Bible cannot be from Allah due to its many contradictions, of which we have seen a small sample above.
The Quran Says the Bible is Corrupt
The following verses from the Quran prove that the Bible has been corrupted.
“Allah made a covenant with the Children of Israel and appointed twelve leaders from among them and ˹then˺ said, “I am truly with you. If you establish prayer, pay alms-tax, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend to Allah a good loan, I will certainly forgive your sins and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow. And whoever among you disbelieves afterwards has truly strayed from the Right Way.” But for breaking their covenant We condemned them and hardened their hearts. They distorted the words of the Scripture and neglected a portion of what they had been commanded to uphold. You ˹O Prophet˺ will always find deceit on their part, except for a few. But pardon them and bear with them. Indeed, Allah loves the good-doers.”[18]
“Do you ˹believers still˺ expect them to be true to you, though a group of them would hear the word of Allah then knowingly corrupt it after understanding it?”[19]
And Allah knows best!
