Allah is merciful and accepts sincere repentance, even from those who tortured His worshipers. If they don’t repent and die in that state, their punishment will be hell, but until then, the door to repentance is open.

In his commentary on this verse, Ibn Kathir quoted Hasan Al-Basri as saying:

This verse should give hope to all of us, for though we may commit sins, all sins (from minor ones to major ones) can be forgiven through sincere repentance and changing our ways, inshaAllah.
